•Providing focus for the writing of the WA ... If it is emphasised to the students that the Rationale has to be very clear and concise, the process of achieving 'clear and concise' will mean that students will be required to think very carefully about what they're actually doing with their Written Assignment.
• In essence, they need to be absolutely clear about what they want to express by using the chosen text type - what the point of the exercise is (and that does not mean 'because the IB says I've got to write this' !)
•If the students get their ideas clear in preparing the Rationale, then the whole WA script is likely to be better focused.
•The examiner will have seen, on the WA cover-sheet, the source references of the 3 or 4 stimulus texts, but will most likely know little else about them.
•It is vital, therefore, that the SL Rationale provides some (succinct) description of the source texts, and explains how these will be used and for what purpose.
•The examiner needs assistance to understand what each student's 'interactive reading' is intended to do.
•To illustrate, a student might write "... the aim of this WA text is to explore what the police and immigration officers feel about doing what must sometimes be a very distressing job.
•So, source Text A provides factual material about... ; Text B explains...; and Text C comments on ... The chosen text type is an official report, written by a policeman who is worried about morale among fellow officers...."
•The examiner will then expect a clear and methodical analysis of emotional reactions, based on factual material drawn from the sources, and probably raising moral questions about how the issue is to be resolved.
AVOID!...
•I HAVE DECIDED TO WRITE ABOUT DONALD TRUMP BECAUSE DONALD TRUMP IS A POLITICAN THAT IS VERY RELEVANT TO US NOWADAYS AND BECAUSE IT IS A TOPIC THAT I AM INTERESTED IN.
